Folks, this is where you put great, great. Thought I would share a review linked to the bootlegged 2010"Picar" release.   Frankly, I'm not sure how to react to this.  Clearly this illegal release is flagrant, in your face, theft.  However, it seems to have given some lift to this years buzz on Anomaly. 

Finally! Known me from the 20 years and very respectable vinyl finally had a compact editing! The only album by the American formations playing progressive jazzującego rock (still with psychodelicznymi ") remind dziwo more recordings of British ' trąbionych ' formations, as if, Galliard and Walrus than American Chicago, Blood, Sweat & Tears or Chase. Opening all of the 11-minute The Monster's Bride is absolutely ingenious filing, rock classic full confidence and at the same time variables ornamented magnificent parkland melodycznymi lines. The remaining 3 pieces (and in particular articles 3 and 4) little it continued. Almost any sources give the date of issue of the slabs as rok1970, but on American longplaya appears however labelu 1972. Nachdem die Band anfangs mit ihren von im Bühnenhintergrund projizierten Filmausschnitten begleiteten Auftritten eher Verwirrung ausgelöst hatte, erspielte man sich eine überschaubare Fangemeinde, als man eine der Hausbands des Chicagoer Pubs "The Wise-Fools" wurde. Zudem erhielt die Gruppe einen Schallplattenvertrag beim eher auf Rhythm & Blues spezialisierten Label Brunswick Records. Unter der Egide des Toningenieurs Bruce Swedien (der in späteren Jahren durch seine Arbeit für Quincy Jones und Michael Jackson bekannt wurde - u.a. war er maßgeblich an der Produktion von "Thriller" beteiligt), entstand 1970 das erste und einzige Studioalbum der Band. Fast gleichzeitig mit der Veröffentlichung Anfang 1971 fiel die Band, wohl auch wegen der ausbleibenden Promotion seitens des Labels, auseinander. Das Album ist heutzutage eine sehr seltene Vinyl-Rarität, die noch immer auf ein reguläres CD-Reissue wartet. Bootlegs existieren. "Anomaly" ist - dem oben umrissenen Konzept der Band entsprechend - eine sehr abwechslungsreiche Angelegenheit. Druckvoller Brassrock (à la Chicago), vertrackt Protoprogressives, Verträumt-Symphonisches und kantig Jazz- bzw. Bluesrockiges werden hier aneinandergereiht und vermengt, ab und an ergänzt um andere stilistische Einlagen, wie leicht Latineskes, spätpsychedelisches Gerocke, Proto-Kammerprogressives, Filmmusikzitate (so taucht z.B. in "Monster Bride" an prominenter Stelle das 20th-Century-Fox-Thema auf), kurze Textrezitationen, Swing- und Ragtimefragmente, kurze Tonband- und Elektronikspielereien und sparsame humoristisch-kabarettistische Ausflüge. Immer dann, wenn Paul Cohn zur Querflöte greift und die Musik eher entspannt dahingleitet, bekommt das Ganze auch ein leicht crimsoneskes Flair (im ersten Teil von "A Brief Message From Your Local Media" z.B.) und erinnert an die frühen, lyrischen Nummern der Briten (z.B. "I Talk to the wind"). Im Grunde sind McLuhan ein erstes Beispiel für eine Stilmischer-Band, wie sie heute (oder vor wenigen Jahren) sehr angesagt sind (waren). Der Mix ist allerdings ausgesprochen gelungen und verströmt eine sehr einheitliche und eigene Atmosphäre. "Anomaly" ist in progressiv-rockiger Hinsicht, mit seinen ausladenden und reich instrumentierten Stücken, sicher eine der interessantesten Scheiben, die in den USA Anfang der 70er Jahre veröffentlicht wurde. Wer Zappaeskes, canterburesken Jazzrock, druckvolles Gebläse, protoprogressive Seltsamkeiten und einfach sehr farbige, komplexe und einfallsreiche Musik schätzt, der sollte dieses tolle Album kennen! Whenever Paul Cohn for flute attacks and the music glides rather relaxed, you get the whole thing a slightly crimsoneskes flair (in the first part of "A Brief Message From Your Local Media" for example) and is reminiscent of the early, lyrical numbers of the British (eg "I Talk To The Wind").

Basically, McLuhan, a first example of a mixer-style band, as today (or a few years ago) are very fashionable (were). The mix, however, is very successful and features a very uniform and unique atmosphere. "Anomaly" is progressive-rocking ways, with its expansive and richly orchestrated pieces, surely one of the most interesting disc that was released in the U.S. in the early 70s. If you appreciate Zappaeskes, canterburesken Jazz Rock, powerful fan, proto progressive oddities and just very colorful, complex and inventive music, should know this great album! A forgotten classic!

Charly - Thanks for your comment.  I saw those recently as well.  I have been in-touch with the heir's to the Brunswick Record label (Mara & Paul Tarnopol) and have actually forwarded your comments.  They are indicating that they are planning to release our album along with others on iTunes, Napster and Rhapsody for North America.  I certainly would like to see a legitimate re-release.  Just so you know none of the Mcluhan musicians has ever seen one cent as far as royalty's.  We understand that Brunswick had a fire and all records as far as sales were destroyed. There were previous litigations, etc. surrounding this.  It's hard for me to work unilaterally to try to encourage a re-release or on related issues because more people were involved (specifically Dave Wright who would have composer and artistic rights who I haven't been able to locate).  I am personally happy that the internet continues to give life and encourage play and hopefully not distort the quality of the original production.  Thanks again for your comment.

first was a poor minisleeve version by japanese POOR HOUSE label, now an edition by a lable called PICAR (ALSO ILLEGITIMATE)is on sale world wide. being located obviously in central or eastern europe, copies are already on sale even in JAPAN...

Just thought I would post an update. Still have not heard from and have been unabile to find Dave Wright. Album seems to continue to gain audience as internet puts it in front of more and more people. Interesting that new reviews now pop-up more frequently and that it is not possible to find a bad review. I find myself listening to Anomaly at least once a month generally on my 3 hour commute to Chicago or to Holland. Current sales on Ebay and through vinyl collectors, Rate Your Music activity interesting because the people discovering it regard it as a great new find. That is what is so uplifting. It will live on and I think with more and more favor. As I listen to other jazz or fusion music, old or new, I don't hear stuff that comes close to how this Album worked. As I have said, the music continues to fight its way out of obscurity. I hope Dave has found out or will find out about his creation.

McLuhan Album Gains Speed in Producer's Wake

Rapid Worldwide communications continue to be Anomaly's best friend.  Every day links to more reviews, ratings and comments would indicate that McLuhan's album (Anomaly) has at least become a true classic Prog Rock gem.  Will it lead to a re-release?  This is unclear as there are currently no discussions regarding this.  There are more "wish-lists" asking for it to be released but there would seem to be formidable obstacles in the shortun.  One factor that could very well speed things along would be the recognition that it is an album produced by Bruce Swedien.

Prior to Michael Jackson's death link to Swedien might have been worth an "Oh-Really" or a "wow".  Now it would seem an audience absolutely smitten by the Michael Jackson legacy might want to know what other significant albums Mr. Swedien was involved with.  Certainly, this would be the most unusual or at least among the most unusual productions Bruce ever was involved with.  Although the Jackson material is not labelled Prog-Rock and the title only fits McLuhan Anomaly for the lack of an alternative tag, the album has striking stylistic similarities to Thriller in musical themes, techniques, rhythms, and narrations.

I happened to stumble on to a new book by none other than Bruce Swedien at Barnes and Noble that is a tribute to Michael Jackson and chronicles his working relationship with Jackson. 

I would think the world needs to start playing a little Monster Bride.

Blast From The Past - John Mahoney at Silvies

I just had to share the experience we had last night when Judy and I went to see John play a set at Silvies Lounge on Irving Park Rd in Chicago.  John was amazing (which is the title of one of the numbers he performed) and he absolutely blew me away.  Combination of remembering the timbre of his voice from way back and with this performance the remarkable range of musical "chords" that he struck with just his own guitar backing up his incredible voice made this experience unforgettable and an emotional high for me.  Quite a one-man show.  Can't help but observing a similar feeling than everyone recently felt with Susan Boyle.  He really should do this more often and more seriously.  We all deserve to hear more.   His short set included.
